How to convert Outlook PST to Lotus Notes NSF

Two most popular and widely used email clients are Microsoft Outlook and IBM Notes. Both the email clients are full of features but their functionalities differ in few areas.

File Storage- Lotus Notes (IBM Notes) stores data in NSF file format while Microsoft Outlook saves their email messages and other information in PST file format.

Server- Lotus Notes is hosted by IBM Domino while Outlook is hosted by Microsoft (main server).

Platform Compatibility- In terms of compatibility Lotus Notes shows more compatibility than Outlook. Outlook is compatible only with Windows Operating System while Notes is compatible with Linux and supports Z and i5 O.S

Cost– For installing Microsoft Outlook you don’t have to pay as it comes within the Microsoft Office Suite. You only have to install some applications for setting an email account but IBM Notes is quite expensive in terms of both installation as well as maintenance.

Security- When we talk of security Lotus notes is more secure than MS Outlook. You can encrypt your email to restrict the unauthorized accessibility while MS Outlook does not allow mail encryption.

Due to more enhanced features of Lotus Notes, users might migrate from Outlook to Lotus Notes. But this migration of outlook to lotus requires a change in the file format from PST to NSF.

How to import PST to NSF file Format?

Use nUpgrade.exe to convert your personal mail data and contacts from Microsoft Outlook to IBM Notes.

Steps to Use nUpgrade.exe for PST to NSF Conversion:

Step 1: Choose Command Prompt or press Window+R button. Then Type cmd.exe

Step 2: Now you have to change to the Lotus Notes client program directory.

Then type the directory path where the Upgrade Wizard (nUpgrade.exe) is located. Type command: drive:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes and click on Enter. And then, write the command nupgrade.exe 3 on your system to launch the Upgrade Wizard.

Step 3: The Upgrade Wizard will appear on your screen. Then Click Next to continue to continue the further process.

Step 4: Now you can select the Outlook profile linked to the file (PST or PAB) which you want to convert. Then again click Next to continue the further process.

Step 5: Now choose your upgrade method in which you want Lotus Notes Upgrade to converts your personal files and data. You can select either Express or Custom option. Go to Next to continue the process.

Step 6: If you opted for the Custom option of Upgrade Method, then you can select the specific items which you want to migrate to IBM Notes. But if you have opted for Express option of Upgrade Method, this will automatically convert all the files, i.e. both PST. The Upgrade Wizard will create the new IBM Notes database in an email folder just below the Notes client data directory.

Step 7 Begin Upgrade screen will appear on the system, just click Finish to begin the process. Once the process begins, you need to provide the IBM Notes User ID.

Step 8: Once the migration is done, you’ll be notified. The files which were migrated, will appear in the Folders view of a database, named as XXX_PersonalFolders.nsf. And the Outlook contacts which were migrated will appear in the Personal Address Book at the local workstation, named as Names.nsf.
